Past and Present: Benson Chevrolet, in Bensonhurst
A look at Brooklyn, then and now. Cars were pretty cool looking in 1933. Think Chicago mobster cars, Bonnie and Clyde, sedans with serious running boards, headlamps that were really lamps, tires with spokes and the spare attached to the side of the car; those kinds of cars, some of which were Chevrolets. They remain…

Past and Present: The Haxtun Cottage of the Children’s Aid Society
A Look at Brooklyn, then and now. Someone wise once said that you can judge a society by how they care for their children. One might also add to that statement by adding how a society cares for the crippled and disabled children and adults, as well. Long before there were government agencies, legal protection…
I know benson Chevrolet very well because my Father ran the service department for many, many years. He was the service manager throught the 1950s and 1960s and worked there till he was almost 60. He started as a Mechanic at 16 years old in the previous places mentioned and after the war became Service Manager. He was in the Navy during the war and returned to the dealership after the war. The owner was named Jack Knightoff during the 1950's and 1960's and his Son in law Albert Tucker, ran the dealership during the 1960s while Jack lived in his other home in Florida. My Dad was and automotive genius for his time. Whenever a customer had a car that the mechanic could not get to run right Victor always took caer of it. It got me a few rides in Corvettes when dad would bring them home for long test rides. That is when I fell in love with Corvettes and finally bought one several years ago. Dad pass away many years ago but I still drive past the old house in my Corvette and always give the motor a few revs just for Dad. My brother Victor Jr. also worked at Benson as a young man until he landed a better job as a mechanic at the Electric company on long Island. Dad was always helping the neighbors with their cars and helped them buy New Chevrolets when they were look for a new car. In 1962 Dad bought my Mom a special new Chevrolet. It was Chevrolets 50th Anniversary and Dad picked the special Anniversary Gold Impala off the car carrier when it came in for her. People were amazed at the beautiful color of the car and Dad dressed it up with chrome wire wheels. Benson will always have a special place in my heart because I kind of grew up there. I met many of the Mechanics and staff and they were a great bunch of guys. I am thrilled the dealership is back with its orginal name as that was the name that most all of us remember. It was that dealership with that name that supplied so many young and old people with Corvette Stingrays, Chevrolet 409s and other high performance Corvairs and Chevelles.
