Door for closet area under the stoop

Hi – Has anyone installed a door to the little closet/space under the stairs in their stoop? We keep ice melt, brooms, other supplies etc in that space and would like to enclose it with a door.
We are unsure what kind of door/enclosure would work for this or who would make or install this. Its not a standard door size opening so I assume would be something custom made. Has anyone installed a door there? What kind was it? Who made and installed the door? Thank you for your input.

BTW my original door has a small vertical pull rather than a knob, like Cate described.

I put a bi-fold door in front of the opening and it works pretty well in the small space.

@bob marvin: old growth pine. new pine would not last but a few years. now a days for better wood we have to go into the next price bracket. and yes, the fir above the construction grade wood=that bracket.

All stoops leak as far as I know. We removed the door on ours to bring more ventilation and light to the area and eliminate mildew. As well, it’s a tight space under the stoop, and the lack of a door makes it easier to maneuver. I have occasionally seen what appear to be original doors under stoops, and they are board and batten with a small vertical pull rather than a knob IIRC.

i can tell you about some of the challenges you will face here (i am a former restoration contractor and yes, i once made doors and have modified doors to fit a variety of situations).

first, because of the humidity down there (these steps always have moisture in and around them), you will probably not want to spend too much money on something even if you can get it made out of better woods. Be careful about getting a stock door and trying to modify it as the current construction practices and materials do not lend to modification and use in moist areas.

my thoughts are, have a batten door made. this is something any experienced carpenter should be able to do. i made batten doors for the shed i built behind my house in 2007 (out of off the shelf radiata pine) and one has just failed completely and one is still together but has issues. my thoughts are that pine under there will start to fail in say 8-10 years, so maybe go with fir. Fir can be had at dykes or Singh Lumber. or you can go with sapele or african mahogany. fir, sapele and mahogany will last longer but eventually they will fail under there. it might just take 20 years.

if you want a pic of the batten door i made for my shed ask and i might get a photo (i can post a flicker link). very, very simple to do. if someone cannot make one, they are not a carpenter and have no business attempting to even hang a door.
